In a break from our SASUKE dry-spell, we would like to congratulate Tokyo as being the host city for the 2020 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXII Olympiad. The city won in a three-round bid against Istanbul, Turkey, and Madrid, Spain.
In February 2012, it was announced that the National Olympic Stadium originally used in the 1964 Summer Olympics, would be receiving a $1 billion upgrade and renovation for both the 2019 Rugby World Cup as well as the 2020 Summer Olympics. The existing stadium will be demolished in 2015 to make way for construction of a new stadium designed by architect Zaha Hadid, to be completed by 2019. The new stadium will be the official venue for athletics, rugby, certain football (soccer) finals, and will play host to the opening and closing ceremonies.
